From January 1 to June 30, 2026, Cyprus holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. One of the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency is security. It aims to strengthen Europe’s response to external threats, improve border management, and support cooperation in the areas of defense and migration.
During its Presidency, Cyprus will focus on effective migration management in both its internal and external dimensions. The Cyprus Presidency will prioritize the full implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact and will promote the strengthening of the return system and cooperation with key third countries to ensure a balanced and comprehensive approach.
The Presidency will also focus on combating internal threats, such as organized and transnational crime, terrorism, and violent extremism, including challenges in the digital sphere. In line with the ProtectEU strategy, swift and decisive action is needed to strengthen law enforcement capabilities, improve cross-border cooperation and improve the regulatory framework.
Cyprus also wants to bring the EU closer to its citizens. This means supporting youth initiatives, social inclusion, and policies that have a significant impact on the daily lives of Europeans.
