The inform “Resettlement, Humanitarian Admission and Sponsorship Schemes”

The inform “Resettlement, Humanitarian Admission and Sponsorship Schemes” looks at the latest developments in the EMN Member States in the period from 2016 to 2022 and offers valuable information to countries launching new programmes to learn from the existing programmes in other countries.

Resettlement, humanitarian admission and sponsorship schemes ensure the protection and resilience of displaced persons while alleviating pressure in the countries of first asylum. These schemes are also a crucial tool for demonstrating global solidarity with non-EU countries.

The majority of EMN Member States have implemented resettlement programmes in the period from 2016 to 2022 and the experience varies greatly. While some countries, such as Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands, have well-established national programmes, most EMN Member States have limited experience and rely on the EU resettlement programme.

The term “resettlement” means the selection and transfer of refugees from a state in which they initially sought protection to a third state which has agreed to admit them as refugees with permanent residence permit.
